Food Policy
The school food environment refers to all the spaces inside and around the school premises where food is available, obtained, purchased and/or consumed. The food environment shapes how accessible, affordable, desirable and convenient specific foods are.
A healthy school food environment allows and encourages the school community (children, families, school staff, etc.) to make healthier food choices that improve their mental and physical wellbeing.
There are different ways through which we shape our school food environment to be more supportive of healthier diets and improved nutrition:
- Setting and enforcing nutrition standards for food, meals and snacks.
- Making nutritious foods more affordable, through subsidies.
- Restricting the sale and advertisement of food products rich in fat, sugar or salt.
- Prohibiting the sale or presence of potato chips.
- Having the school kiosk serve healthy sandwiches that include dairy products and vegetables, with options for those with allergies and intolerances.
- Making sure that all products available are sourced from respected factories, manufacturers, and brands where standards of health are clearly upheld.
- Ensuring all standards of cleanliness are maintained, well documented and supervised accordingly.
