Behavior and Discipline Policy
Our behavior policy supports us to create a caring, stimulating and secure environment in which staff and students can work and play safely and parents/guardians are encouraged to be involved in the development of their child.
Thus, our discipline policy aims to:
- Raise students’ self-confidence and ensure systematic attendance.
- Promote/develop empathy and respect for themselves and others.
- Develop students’ sense of self-discipline and acceptance of responsibility for their own actions and to act positively.
- Develop an awareness of and adherence to appropriate behavior rules.
- Encourage students to value the school environment and school routines.
- Ensure that students understand and feel confident about their rights and responsibilities.
- Ensure students know they have the right to be treated fairly and the responsibility to treat others fairly.
- Empower staff to determine and request appropriate behavior from everyone.
- Acknowledge that the maintenance of good behavior within the school is a shared responsibility.
- Work within a positive pro-active, reflective approach to behavior management.
- Ensure the policy is fully understood and is consistently implemented by all members of the school community.
- Ensure effective mechanisms are in place for the monitoring and evaluation of this policy.
Teachers can discipline pupils whose conduct falls below the standard that could reasonably be expected of them. This means that if a student misbehaves, breaks a school rule or fails to follow a reasonable instruction, the teacher can impose a punishment on that student accordingly.
The discipline:
- Must be reasonable in all circumstances.
- Should be proportionate and fair to be effective.
- Is not personal in nature but directed at the action.
- Should not be harsh but rather awakening and building awareness.
- May take two segments: educationally or disciplinary.
