Grading System Policy
Our schools meet students at their instructional levels and move them to the next level through rigorous and challenging coursework tailored to their individual needs. Additionally, we communicate as clearly and regularly as possible how each student is progressing and our expectations for their success.
We believe students, teachers, and parents are partners in the learning process and everyone involved needs to understand where the student stands academically and how to help them reach their individual goals. In this endeavor, we have developed a school-wide grading policy.
The following grading policy is followed by all Albayan Schools’ staff:
Preschool grading system
- The preschool grading system assesses students’ abilities to achieve the skills required in writing, reading, listening, and speaking, in English/French and Arabic, and mathematics. At this stage, students are evaluated on a clustered line, whether inclined or declined, to monitor their accomplishments. Their progress is evaluated every 3 months.
Elementary Cycle (Grades 1 till 6) grading system
- The Elementary cycle grading system assesses students’ abilities to achieve the skills required in English/French, Arabic, mathematics, science, and other secondary subjects. At this stage, students’ accomplishments are assessed on a grading scale average. Evaluations are distributed 4 times a year Grades 4, 5 and 6 students must pass in the final average to be promoted to the next class.
- Note: To be graded accurately, students sit tests on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
Middle Cycle (Grades 7 & 8) grading system
- The Middle cycle grading system assesses students’ abilities to achieve the skills required in English/French, Arabic, mathematics, science, biology, chemistry, physics, social studies and other secondary subjects. At this stage, students’ accomplishments are assessed in 1st evaluation, midterm exams, 2nd evaluation, and last term exams.
- Note: Students must pass in the final average to be promoted to the next class.
Secondary Cycle (Grades 10 & 11) grading system
- The Secondary cycle grading system assesses students’ abilities to achieve the skills required in English/French, Arabic, mathematics, science, biology, chemistry, physics, social studies and other secondary subjects. At this stage, students’ accomplishments are assessed in 1st evaluation, midterm exams, 2nd evaluation, and last term exams.
- Note: Students must pass in the final average to be promoted to the next class.
Official Exam Classes (Grades 9 & 12) grading system
- The grading system of grades 9 and 12 assesses students’ abilities to achieve the skills required in the main subjects of English/French, Arabic, mathematics, science, biology, chemistry, physics, social studies, and philosophy (G 12). At this stage, students are assessed through the official exams criteria over the course of three terms (evaluations and trials).
- Note: Students must pass the official exams to be promoted to the next level.
Completion Exams:
Students who do not meet the average required of the school in the main subjects will sit a completion test. The completion test identifies their abilities and supports them to address skills and knowledge gaps. A commitment is signed by parents or guardians, if needed.
Exempt students:
Grade 7 and 10 students are exempt from final exams if they achieve an average of A+ on the overall evaluations.
